Heritage 44 is a series of bygone suites located within the heart of the French Concession, built in 1940 by renowned Chinese designers Xi Fuquan, Huang Dayou and Zhao Di. While it looks unassuming, the cosy abode also has its own history.
The beautiful courtyard of Heritage 44 was once home to Sun Ke, the only son of Sun Yat-Sen, the first ever president of the Republic of China. In the 1940s, he lived there with his 2nd spouse Lan Ni who called the place home until she died in the 1990s.
Featuring 3 bedrooms, a living area and fully equipped kitchen, this 230 French-style garden home has a mid-century modern interior design that is interjected with several antique furniture finds, giving it a subdued old world charm.
While most of its interior has been elegantly refurbished, certain classic interior accents have been kept intact, such as the windows, window latches and door knobs, and floor and wall tiles in the kitchen and bathroom that add to the personality of the space.
Heritage 44 certainly makes for a unique stay amidst Shanghai’s rapid and boundless development, and takes guests on a trip down memory lane with its quaint appeal. As one would expect, it makes any trip to Shanghai just that much more special.
