Dating back to the Ming Dynasty centuries ago, the expansive Yu Garden, which covers a 20,000 square metre space, was owned by a government officer named Pan Yunduan who built the garden as a tranquil and reinvigorating resting place for his parents of old age.
There is no other place like this humble UNESCO World Heritage Site and it rightfully earns its place based on its aesthetics alone. Needless to say, it is a photographer’s dream as every nook and cranny of the garden looks absolutely divine.
Dotted with pavilions, chambers, halls, terraces, rock sculptures and water streams boasting styles of the Ming and Qing dynasties, the garden itself is divided into several parts, the Eastern area, Western area, Central area and the Internal Garden, each separated by dragon walls.
On top of its exceptional architecture and scenic spots, all sorts of cultural and recreational activities are held at the garden throughout the year. Many also frequent the Yuyuan Bazaar adjacent to the garden for traditional Chinese commodities and delicious local snacks.
