One unmissable sight is the Ijen Crater that is located in a caldera formed by some enormous eruption millenniums ago. Though worth it, descending down to the crater gets crazy strenuous due to its rocky trail and sulfur gas clouds that envelope everything, greatly impeding visibility.
To experience the beauty of Ijen in all of its glory, most people begin their trek in the wee hours of the morning at about 1.30AM, equipped with a headlamp or flashlight, proper hiking shoes and a gas mask, which can be rented at the parking lot nearby the start of the trail.
After trudging up the hill for about 1 hour, the elusive blue flame will finally be in view. When combustion of sulfuric gases occurs, an extraordinary blue glow is produced as a result and it goes without saying that many are compelled to get up close and personal with these flames.
Many go as far as to see the blue flames and skip the breath-taking sunrise which is also just as exceptional. While trekking Ijen is completely doable for seasoned adrenaline junkies, there is also the option of hiring a professional guide for the journey to have an extra peace of mind.
